Last month, the Social Security Administration announced a dozen new additions to its list of conditions that qualify for an expedited approval under its Compassionate Allowance rules.
The Compassionate Allowance List made up of more than 200 serious or life-threatening conditions. The latest additions as of 2021 are:
- Charlevoix Saguenay Spastic Ataxia (ARSACS)
- Choroid Plexus Carcinoma
- CIC-rearranged Sarcoma
- Congenital Zika Syndrome
- Desmoplastic Mesothelioma
- Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – Adult
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
- Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma
- Renpenning Syndrome
- SCN8A Related Epilepsy with Encephalopathy
- SYNGAP1-related NSID
- Taybi-Linder Syndrome
Social Security established the Compassionate Allowance List in 2012 in response to complaints about long wait times for decisions.
The program attempts to identify some of the most serious claims to come before the agency in the hopes of issuing favorable decisions as quickly as possible with minimal medical evidence. In some cases, Compassionate Allowance cases can be approved in as little as 10 days with simply a diagnosis and supporting medical evidence.
Since the program began, Social Security has periodically added new conditions to the list, which can be found here.
“Everyone who is eligible for benefits under the programs we administer should receive them,” said Acting Social Security Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi said in a statement. “Our Compassionate Allowances program helps us address barriers by helping accelerate the disability application process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their medical condition.”
It is important to note, however, that not all serious conditions qualify under the Compassionate Allowance rules, so you should consult with an attorney if you have any questions about whether your application could be expedited under the program.
