Living with a disability can mean different things for different people. Some individuals may have a disability that affects their lives but that can be managed with certain accommodations, particularly in the workplace. Unfortunately, others may experience disabling conditions that are so severe that they cannot work even with the aid of certain accommodations. As a result, those parties may need Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.
Though a person may need these benefits, it does not necessarily mean that he or she will automatically receive them. The application process can be long and difficult, and it is not unusual for well-deserving individuals to face a denial of benefits. If that is the case, they may need to go further and appeal the initial denial to keep their chances of receiving benefits alive.
If a person is hoping to receive benefits, asking the following questions before applying may be helpful:
- Is the person currently working, or could the person feasibly work with reasonable accommodations?
- How does the condition affect previous work the person did?
- How severe is the disabling condition or the impairments that the condition cause?
- How do the symptoms and effects of the condition compare to the listing of impairments that the Social Security Administration uses?
Answering these questions honestly could give a potential applicant a better idea of whether he or she could reasonably qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Of course, the answers to these questions are not the only factors that will play a part in the SSDI application process as the SSA will require evidence to support a disability claim. Fortunately, if individuals believe that they have a qualifying condition, a thorough explanation of their situation and assistance from legal professionals may bolster their chances of an approval.
