Hundreds of thousands of vets struggle with vision issues

On Behalf of | Jun 19, 2020 | Veterans' Issues

Disabilities are not always as obvious to outsiders as amputations or spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis. Many disabilities may not stand out in the same way, but they can still have a drastic impact on a person’s life. It’s important not to overlook that impact in any way.

For instance, when looking strictly at disabled military veterans, stats show that more than 130,000 of them have become legally blind. These individuals may never be able to work again. And it’s about more than just income and careers. They may lose relationships, not be able to participate in hobbies, need constant care and assistance, and generally feel like their quality of life has fallen due to this disability.

And the above is just those who are legally blind. Another 1,000,000 veterans have to endure low vision levels. These levels, while not constituting complete blindness, still lead to a “loss of ability to perform daily activities.” Again, a person’s day-to-day life is changed dramatically and completely by the fact that they cannot see as well as they used to. Ask anyone who wears glasses how hard it is to get around without them, and they’ll tell you that it’s very difficult indeed. Things like driving a car can become dangerous or downright impossible.

Military members put their lives and their health on the line for the country. Many of them make massive sacrifices to do so, and this is just one more example of how that plays out. Those dealing with these types of disability issues need to know what legal options they have.
