Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a kind of benefit that helps boost your income each month. This program, funded by the federal government, has the goal of providing additional financial help to children and adults with disabilities in the United States. Those who qualify have limited assets and income.
To qualify for SSI, you’ll need to show at least some of the following requirements apply to your situation. First, you’ll need to show that you have a significant disability or that you are blind. Next, you’ll want to show that you live on a limited income and have limited assets.
SSI is only available to citizens or nationals of the United States. Some aliens qualify based on their application depending on their statuses.
You should show that you currently live in the District of Columbia or one of the 50 states. You may also live in the Northern Mariana Islands. Children who live with military parents may also qualify for benefits based on their parents’ stations, even though they are abroad. The same is true for students who are temporarily living abroad while studying.

Regardless of your age, you should look into making an application if you have been awarded Social Security Disability (SSD) or plan to apply for it. You can receive both, so it’s wise to apply for both if you will receive one or the other already. The same information could be used on both applications, making it easier to apply all at once.
