Disabled veterans need better access to health care

by | Jan 19, 2018 | Veterans' Issues

Veterans are some of the hardest-working individuals in the country. They served their country, protected it and they deserve respect. Some veterans find that it’s difficult to get the medical care they need, and combined with an inability to work or reliance on financial benefits, this can become frustrating.

The Veterans Affairs (VA) health system is there for people who have suffered injuries and served in the military. Unfortunately, the system is often underfunded and overcapacity. This can mean long wait times for veterans looking for health care. Many veterans need services now, but they’re told they have to wait for weeks, months or longer. Many aren’t even able to schedule a treatment.

Both in the states and federally, it’s important for legislators to begin talking about what they can do for veterans. Veterans need to be able to access care for physical and mental health concerns as soon as possible. For many, a long wait is a death sentence or means their health will continue to deteriorate.

Many veterans need health care for only a short time, but being able to access it is still a problem. It’s necessary to find a way for them to get care quickly to prevent health problems that could have been prevented with early treatment.

Veterans may need additional support and care while they await treatment. Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) support them financially, while the VA has its own hospitals to treat physical and emotional wounds. Your attorney can help you file an application for disability or supplemental support while you wait for the medical care you need.
